Bondurant Substation – Wetland Construction
- Site Plan for an electric transmission substation on a portion of an 80-acre site of existing cultivated fields.
- No distinct drainage courses were available to discharge storm water.
- Property records showed a series of existing field tiles that de-watered the site.
- The design called for intercepting the drainage tile and rerouting it with a soild pipe around the substation. It was reconnected to the tile system on the opposite side of the site.
- Depressed areas of varying depths were created to collect storm water runoff to simulate the “prairie potholes” that once covered the site.
- An overflow structure to regulate the water level of the wetland was constructed and tied to the tile system.
- The site was drilled with different seed mixes, based on anticipated water levels and periods of inundation.
- The constructed wetland area serves as habitat for birds and other animals. It helps control sediment and chemical runoff from surrounding fields by filtering the water as it recharges the groundwater system.
